Throughout my years as a competitive equestrian, softball player and active student at Douglas College, I have seen and learned many different teaching styles. Some of which only work for students of specific learning styles. Being able to adapt my way of teaching to be able to individualize each student’s learning to ensure that they can get as much out of their education as they possibly can is my primary objective. My focus will be to maintain a safe and fun environment where each student enjoys going to school and coming into my classroom with an open mind each day.
Fitness and physical activity have always been the highlight of my childhood and growing up into an adult. There is a small population of people who have physically active all their population of people who have been physically active all their lives, but for me that is all I’ve ever known. What I want to share with others is the chance to become active at whatever stage of life they are at. Through my experience at Douglas College, I can provide advice and answers to those who do not have the same knowledge. Therefore, I want to encourage others to learn and apply active life to their everyday lives.
Based on my knowledge I know the importance in fostering a healthy lifestyle at a young age. This gives me the advantages to understand the needs and age appropriate activities and changes for different individuals. Every person deals with health and fitness in a different way so being able to be flexible and modify to people’s needs is very important. I am a very personable individual and that gives me the advantage to work with many different people and at different ages. I am encouraging and enthusiastic, these aspects will motivate others to learn and participate in a healthy and active lifestyle. I want to be encouraging not discouraging.
I want to be able to learn and adapt with my student and make them feel as if they can have some control of their learning. I think it is important to go over the expectations for the day each morning to ensure the students know what is expected of them and what their roles are as students in my classroom. I have seen that many students enjoy learning and working on problems together in a group environment, where they have the freedom to voice their opinions and share their ideas with their peers.
I believe in making the classroom a safe environment where students can have the opportunity to make suggestions to me and understand that I will make sure they have the option to give me feedback. I want to be able to let the students know that their voices will be heard in the classroom. I will also be doing activities through the year that will help learn skills such as: teamwork, leadership, and communication. I want my students to understand that the most important skills to be learned will be being able to show others respect while working towards common goals. While creating a safe space for my students, I want to make sure that they understand that making mistakes is a building block in learning and understanding the value of never giving up because it will only make them stronger later.
As a future teacher, I want to be constantly learning and adapting to new teaching methods, experiences and to my students’ individual needs. I want my students to be able to give me feedback on what they like and dislike about my teaching by doing two anonymous teacher evaluations throughout the year to help me be able to reflect on my abilities and help me be the best teacher I can be.
